In the statement made by Yvonne Nelson, she asserts that President Akufo-Addo's policies of unbridled borrowing and reckless spending have led Ghana into an "economic dumsor."
Yvonne Nelson, an award-winning actress and movie producer, has expressed regret for congratulating President Akufo-Addo after his victory in the 2016 general election in Ghana. In her recent memoir titled "I Am Not Yvonne Nelson," she explained that Akufo-Addo's actions as an opposition leader were drastically different from his actions as the President, leading to her disappointment in his failure to deliver on his promises.
Nelson stated that Ghanaians had placed their trust in Akufo-Addo to restore the country and stabilize the economy, particularly after experiencing difficulties such as the power crisis, known as "dumsor," during the John Mahama administration. She criticized Akufo-Addo for failing to live up to his image as a conscientious leader who would fight against corruption, accusing his government of unbridled borrowing, corruption, and reckless spending, which she believes further worsened the nation's economic woes.
According to Nelson, this disappointment in Akufo-Addo's performance led to a loss of hope among Ghanaians, and the ruling party nearly lost the parliamentary election. Previously, Yvonne Nelson had been an activist speaking out against the power crisis, organizing protests with the hashtag #DumsorMustStop. Some political critics attributed her activism to playing a role in Akufo-Addo's victory in the 2016 election.
In addition, Nelson shared that she was approached by an influential individual associated with the presidency who suggested sponsoring her to contest the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat in the 2020 elections. However, she pointed out that the seat was already occupied by a candidate from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the invitation to run indicated that they had already made plans to clear the way for her if she expressed interest.
These statements and revelations by Yvonne Nelson reflect her disillusionment with President Akufo-Addo's performance and her critical assessment of his government's handling of the economy and corruption issues in Ghana.
